Soho House reopened it in April 2002 as their first public cinema and took out all two hundred and forty seats: what is there now is ninety-eight leather armchairs with footstools, two long sofas at the back, and beds in the front row.\n\nThe bar sells cocktails and wine rather than popcorn, and the screen is built to open outwards past the arch at the start of every film to whatever width the print needs, which is a piece of theatre in itself. William Lusby bought it in 1868, and by 1877 it was Lusby's Summer and Winter Palace, holding five thousand people and opening five folding doors onto a garden promenade - the first music hall to have one. It burned down in January 1884, and the owners hired Frank Matcham, who would go on to build the Hackney Empire, the London Palladium and the Victoria Palace. The Paragon Theatre of Varieties opened in May 1885 and gave stages to Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel, Little Tich and Gertie Gitana. Film crept into the bill from 1912, ABC demolished the theatre and rebuilt in 1938, and in 1963 Joan Littlewood held the East End's first royal film premiere here for Sparrows Can't Sing, with Barbara Windsor in it and the Krays in the audience.\n\nIt is independent and family-run now, and programmes wider than a cinema strictly needs to: new releases and independent film, 35mm prints, National Theatre broadcasts, a cult and trash strand in the bar, professional wrestling, and a run of festivals through the autumn - the London Independent Film Festival, Fringe!, the Hong Kong and Tibet film festivals. It became the Coliseum in 1926 and the Rex in 1936, and in 1938 Howes and Jackman turned the auditorium around - the screen moved to the far end, the floor was re-raked, and Mollo and Egan lined the side walls with fourteen Art Deco panels while leaving the 1910 barrel-vaulted ceiling where it was. Both are still above and beside you.\n\nDemolition for an office block was proposed in 1983 and defeated by a local campaign, and in 1985 the building passed to a trust. F.E. Bromige stripped that out in 1937 and rebuilt the interior in Art Deco, and although bombing simplified the front, the 1937 cinema is substantially what is there now. It has been historically protected since 1997.\n\nWhat it showed changed with the neighbourhood: cartoons through the 1950s, one of London's first arthouse programmes in 1960, adult films as the Tatler Cinema Club from 1970, then kung fu, Bollywood and Elvis revivals, before it became a community-run cinema in 1976 and a charity three years later. In the 1980s it was where the Black Audio Film Collective worked and where Hackney's campaigns met. Fifty years of that are being marked through 2026. The site, found on Boxing Day 2007, was a derelict pool club in an Edwardian hall that had once been a community theatre. It opened in September 2008 with a street party and I AM A CINEMA. LOVE ME. painted across the front, which is still there.\n\nIt is the only cinema in London whose front of house is run entirely by volunteers, and more than four hundred people have done it.
