The Electric Ballroom has been a dance hall since the 1930s and an Irish one for much of that. Dingwalls sits on the canal by the lock, and the Underworld is beneath the World's End at the top of the road.\n\nWhat follows a show is thinner than the shows deserve. The pavement between Clapham North and Clapham Common on a Friday is one of the busiest in south London, and the crowd is young, loud and mostly local.\n\nTwo rooms stand out of it. Infernos is a basement disco on the high street - floor-fillers, booths and a karaoke room - and it is the name people who do not live here know. Dalston Superstore opened in 2009 as a gay bar with a basement and has been the queer anchor of the district since. The Ridley Road Market Bar is up a staircase behind a market stall. Oslo is a converted railway building by Hackney Central. Lafayette is a new room in the development behind the station, Kings Place put two concert halls on the canal at York Way, and Coal Drops Yard turned the coal sheds into shops with bars among them. Round the corner on Frith Street, Ronnie Scott's has been running since 1959 and plays two sets a night, the second one to a room that has usually been drinking through the first. Bar Italia opened in 1949 and shuts for about three hours around dawn.\n\nWhat Soho is not is a club district. The rooms are small, mostly basements, and the night is built on moving between them rather than committing to one. Everything else in the district grew up around it.\n\nThat everything else is mostly railway arches. The viaduct into Waterloo cuts the area into brick vaults, and the vaults took the clubs that wanted late licences and thick walls - which is how a district with almost no residents became the one that ran longest.
