off the entrance corridor, divided by wood and etched-glass partitions, with the saloon at the back under ornate mirrors and a decorated Bass mirror on the wall.\n\nThe rarest thing in it is the least showy. Beside the bar is the manager's office, glazed and etched, from which the house could be watched - almost every other one in London has been taken out to make space.\n\nIt stands a few steps from Oxford Circus and next to the London Palladium, which is why the snugs fill and empty at curtain times. What survives is the whole scheme: a U-shaped bar serving two rooms divided by a screen of wood and glass, mirrored fittings and overmantels, a deep gilded frieze in the Adam manner, a plaster ceiling of medallions, gilded panels by Callcott, and an extension room lit by three lanterns. There is a corner turret with an ogee cupola.\n\nIn 2013 the tenant took every draught beer off in protest at what the pub company was charging him, and the pumps stayed dry for years; cask came back with a new lease in 2022. There is a covered beer garden, in flower through the summer, and screens for the sport in two of the bars.\n\nIrish music on Tuesdays. It was a finalist for CAMRA's National Cider Pub of the Year in 2018, and has taken its branch's Pub of the Year twice and its Cider Pub of the Year three times. Behind three arches runs a line of carved booths. A free-standing triangular iron stove stands in the middle with the initials TIK on it, said to have come from Gray's Inn around 1815.\n\nIt looks ancient and mostly is not. The fascia claims a pub here since 1430, and the cellars may be seventeenth-century from the coffee house that stood here, but the building is of 1923-4, put up for Henekey's wine shop in a convincing neo-Tudor. The ground floor keeps an early-nineteenth-century shop front with glazing bars and a four-panel door, and there is a fire assurance sign on the first floor - the mark a private fire company put on buildings it would turn out for.\n\nThe pub is number 6 and the house next door is number 7; the whole of Ballast Quay went on the register together, which is why the row still reads as one piece of waterfront rather than a pub with neighbours.\n\nYoung's have it. Two of the public bar's screens were taken out and the joinery of the counter still shows where they stood. CAMRA is blunt about it: both stories belong to an earlier Horse Grenadier tavern that stood to the north and closed by the 1830s, before this building existed.\n\nOne thing that did happen here: the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition set off from the door on 1 September 1955 to drive to Singapore. The central island bar is the original, with a small bar-back and an optic stand that began life as its cradle; there are cast-iron Corinthian columns, a Lincrusta ceiling and dado panelling. The back bar has a good set of mirrors of about 1900 and a fireplace of the late nineteenth century. Some partitioning survives at the entrance with its glass renewed, and a fragment of frieze is still there behind a food counter put in much later. The pool room at the rear keeps panelling from the early twentieth century, and the cellars run under the road.\n\nThe huge clear windows are not original, which is worth knowing before you judge the front.\n\nIt was in CAMRA's very first Good Beer Guide, selling Charrington IPA, and was still selling cask in 2023, for which it was given a fiftieth-anniversary award. Dryden was set on by hired men in Lazenby Court alongside in 1679 and the upstairs room is named for him, with Latin on the beams about it. Dickens drank here while working in Catherine Street. The cast of Oliver! used it in the early sixties, and Barry Humphries met Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in it.\n\nUpstairs is table service. It now stands by itself in Mile End Park, which is why the first sight of it is so strange.\n\nIt was protected in 2015 for being almost unaltered outside and for an interior scheme that is largely complete, including the small differences between the bars that told you which class of drinker each was meant for.\n\nTwo handpumps, usually a real cider, live music at the weekend, no machines and no television. It was rebuilt in 1851 and renamed for Joseph Paxton, whose Crystal Palace stood that very year in Hyde Park directly across the road. And the building you walk into is the third of them, put up in 1900-02 by G. D. Martin.\n\nThat third one is a gin palace and looks it: a central bar, etched-glass mirrors, polished woodwork and tiling.\n\nThere is a restaurant upstairs and a sports bar in the basement called the Hydeaway, with pool and table football. Edward Ardizzone drew the saloon bar here for Maurice Gorham's Back to the Local, and a copy of the drawing hangs in it.\n\nA fire in cold weather, an open kitchen, a separate dining room and Sunday roasts. Morris & Son, stained glass and mahogany bar fittings, with four cast-iron Corinthian columns at the middle of the island bar holding up a patterned ceiling and a tiled frieze of urns and swags. There is a wrought-iron staircase and an Art Nouveau dado in the first-floor bar.\n\nGo downstairs as well. The gents' is protected in its own right - marble urinals with their original tiling and fittings - and people do ask to look.\n\nOne honest note, because CAMRA makes it. The wood-and-etched-glass compartments that make the room what it is were put back by Sam Smith's in 2007, not left over from 1891. Dickens is thought to have used it for the Magpie and Stump in Pickwick. It is also one of the pubs that claims to be London's oldest, which CAMRA records as a claim and so do we.\n\nThe Royal Courts of Justice are across the road, so the trade is barristers, and the walls are legal caricatures and old film posters. The snug on the left is the Wig Box. There is a resident cat who wears a ruff. The garden beside the car park is large and fills the moment the sun comes out.\n\nIt is in Pickwick Papers and in Dracula, and Keats is said to have written the Ode to a Nightingale in the garden. That is what a mews was: the stables and the staff quarters behind the great houses, reached from the back. The Star is still down one, off a cul-de-sac behind Belgrave Square, and finding it is half the pleasure.\n\nWood panelling and a real fire. It was refurbished in 2008.\n\nA great many stories attach to the place - that the Great Train Robbery was planned in the room upstairs, that Profumo met Christine Keeler here, that Elizabeth Taylor, Bing Crosby, Peter O'Toole and Princess Margaret drank here. They are told as stories and none of them carries a source. What is on the record is the beer: it has been in every edition of the Good Beer Guide since the first, and Roger Protz brought a certificate in September 2017 to mark forty-five years of it. Inside are the original mahogany fittings, more embossed glass and mirrors, a Jacobean-style moulded plaster ceiling, and over the rear bar - once the billiard room - a lantern with a stained-glass clerestory above it.\n\nThe front bar has been altered and the ground floor opened out into one very large room, so the fittings have survived better than the plan. The barrel-vaulted back room, added later, is the best of it. None of that is why it is protected, though, or why it is on CAMRA's inventory: the fittings that matter are of the 1930s - the spittoon troughs along the foot of the bar, the bar-back and wall panelling of that date, and Art Deco tiles in the lino.\n\nIt was Jeffrey Bernard's pub, and the one Keith Waterhouse put on stage in Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell, which is still staged here from time to time. Norman Balon kept it for more than sixty years, retired in 2006, called himself London's rudest landlord and wrote a book called You're Barred, You Bastards!; he died in 2026 at 99, and he is on the sign. Private Eye held its fortnightly editorial lunch upstairs until 2014, with Special Branch in the bar below.\n\nPiano singalongs on Wednesday and Saturday. Inside are advertising mirrors, the original light fittings, a great deal of tilework, and a mosaic of dogs and ducks; the name may come from the sport of setting dogs on pinioned ducks, which is what Soho did for entertainment before it had theatres.\n\nIt is very small. The bar has been extended towards the Frith Street door and there are few seats.\n\nGeorge Orwell drank here, and when the American Book of the Month Club took Animal Farm he celebrated with real absinthe the landlord had found somewhere - a celebration, not a habit. CAMRA's researchers put it after 1911, made by a licensee who had misread the 1910 Licensing Act and thought he was required to.\n\nA wall lists the drinkers: Dylan Thomas, Hemingway, Alec Guinness. James Thomson used it as his local and may have written Rule, Britannia! in a room upstairs. It flooded waist-deep in January 1928. The Graphic wrote it up in April 1909 as the turn between the compartmented pub of the 1890s and the open-plan neo-Georgian and Tudor pubs that came after, which is exactly what it is. Outside it is Domestic Revival, with green tile piers, Tuscan-columned porches and stained glass in the upper lights.\n\nThe interior is complete and in four rooms: a public bar to the right of a large saloon, which opens into the restaurant at the rear. Beamed ceilings, panelled dados, neo-Georgian fireplaces, a mahogany counter and fittings with pilasters framing the mirrors, Tudor-arched doors, pedimented screens to the saloon, panelled bar partitions, and wall benches on turned balusters. It was redecorated early in 2024, in keeping.\n\nThe room at the back is a Thai restaurant run by somebody else, open every day. A partition with double doors leads through to a big back room with its own counter, its own spittoon, a huge fireplace and an ornamented stage behind curtains - which is why it worked as the Newlands Tavern, a pub-rock room, in the 1970s. Truman's gold lettering runs round the walls at picture-rail height. The old public bar spent years as a flat and is in storage, waiting to go back in.\n\nAn improved public house was the between-the-wars idea that a pub should be roomy, respectable and full of things to do. Around them is one room with fixed seating against the walls, sepia music-hall prints, and a polyphon that still works.\n\nBe a little careful with the age. A pub is first mentioned here in 1731 and the front is Georgian under Edwardian green faience, but Historic England notes that the partitions splitting the front into two bars came out in a 1958 refit, the lobby partitions went in then, and while some snob screens are original others belong to that restoration. There is a parish boundary marker of 1831 on the corner.\n\nA small garden at the back with mirrors on the walls, and an upstairs room for eating in. What is certainly old is the floor: four hundred years of flagstones, worn into dips, which the pub is right to make a fuss of.\n\nIt stands on Wapping Wall with the water at the back, and the terrace and the upstairs both look straight out at it. The noose strung from a beam over the foreshore is a nod to Execution Dock, where pirates were hanged and left for three tides to wash over them - which happened a few hundred yards from here rather than at the pub, but the association is old and the pub has never been shy about it.\n\nPepys and Turner are both claimed as drinkers. It is the sister of his Salisbury on Green Lanes, and Historic England reckons the pair of them the pinnacle of late-Victorian pub design. Many of the fittings were made in his own workshops and the Art Nouveau glass is by Cakebread, Robey.\n\nYou come in through a circular lobby with a QH monogram in the mosaic floor and a wrought-iron screen lettered THE QUEENS, under a corner drum with a lead roof. Inside is largely intact: a central bar serving four areas divided by ornate glazed partitions with etched doors and Art Nouveau stained glass above them, Ionic terms flanking the counter towards the saloon, a snuggery set in an inglenook with a tiled fireplace and a mirrored overmantel, a coffered ceiling of arabesques and mermaids, and cast-iron Corinthian columns. The front-bar screen has been cut through so you can get round, and one end is now formal dining with an open kitchen.\n\nIt was very nearly a pizza restaurant; a residents' campaign with CAMRA stopped that. One partition survives, making a small snug at one end of the bar; you can read where the others were from the bar top, which changes from marble to hardwood at each vanished division.\n\nIt was first licensed in 1694 as the Coach and Horses, and the Regency fancy used to meet at or near here to make matches for prize fights. It is French Renaissance and it is not shy about it: shaped gables, ogee-domed cupolas, a central tower under a wrought-iron crown, and two enormous polished-granite columns carrying half-octagonal turrets. The lobbies are tiled, with mosaic floors and wrought-iron screens.\n\nThe ground floor is open under a compartmented ceiling on cast-iron columns, with a curved bar that has a stone trough running along its foot, engraved mirrors, and a saloon divided off by an arched screen of glass engraved with Art Nouveau motifs. The billiard room is large and lit from above through glass painted with a creeping vine. Upstairs is the former restaurant and concert room, with an elaborate fibrous-plaster ceiling by the Mural Decoration Company and engraved glass by Cakebread & Robey. Historic England's own summary of the inside is that it is magnificently elaborate and complete.\n\nHistoric England reckons this and his Queens at Crouch End the pinnacle of late-Victorian pub design. Gilded mirrors above a crescent-shaped bar, painted tiles set into niches in the wall, wood panelling, a narrow central section, and several doors off the street from the days when each led into a different bar. Portraits of Queen Victoria throughout.\n\nUp a spiral stair are a library and a theatre bar, fitted out in the 1950s with pieces taken from the Gaiety Theatre. David Bowie launched a record in that room in 1966.\n\nThree things are told about the pub as stories rather than as facts, and are worth having as stories: that it opened on the day of Victoria's accession, 20 June 1837; that she came in after Paddington station was rebuilt in 1854; and that Dickens wrote part of Our Mutual Friend here. The stained glass is lively.\n\nThe nudes on the semicircular canopy over the servery look Art Nouveau and are not. They are signed Colin Beswick and dated 1965, and they were painted to play up a story that the place had once been a brothel - a story CAMRA considers unlikely. The idea that \"randy\" comes from Randolph Avenue round the corner is folk etymology, and is reported as such.\n\nThe room on the left was once three, as the pattern of the ceiling shows; the part that was lowest in status has matchboard panelling and a Bass mirror well past its best, and there are chequerwork glazed screens high up and a skylight over the first-floor landing. Edward Ardizzone drew \"The Lounge at the Warrington\" for Back to the Local, and Otto Preminger filmed here for Bunny Lake Is Missing in 1965. Historic England dates the building to 1830; the tavern's own account has it opening in 1837, the year Victoria came to the throne, on the site of the old George Tavern.\n\nIt was known for its whitebait dinners, which brought political, literary and artistic London downriver, and Dickens set Bella Wilfer's wedding breakfast here in Our Mutual Friend.\n\nThe inside is not what the outside promises. The Trafalgar closed in 1915 and spent the next fifty years as an institute for aged merchant seamen, a working men's club, a centre for the unemployed and finally flats for the navy, which is what saved it from demolition in 1937. It did not reopen as a pub until 1965, when the old interior was gutted and remade by craftsmen from Pinewood Studios - so the Regency opulence you walk into is 1960s film work. The panelled oak screens that cut it into small rooms are not that old, and this is the part usually got wrong: they are a refit of 1933, and so are the names on the doors.\n\nThere are three small bars reached from the street - the Campden Bar at the front centre with a door of its own, the Private Bar on the corner and the Sherry Bar at the rear left, both off Peel Street - and the Ordinary Bar to the right. The counter is C-shaped, with a matchboard front and carved mahogany shelving; the benches are fixed and pew-like; a ceiling beam carries corbels carved as bunches of grapes; and in the Sherry Bar a painting of Windsor Castle is set into the panelling above an arched brick fireplace.
