Cash is welcome, and haggling is normal near the end of the morning when what is left has to go.\n\nNobody minds you coming to look rather than to buy, which - given that it is going at four in the morning - makes it one of the few things in London worth doing when you are awake and nothing else is. It is a working floor rather than a shop, though, and the conditions are strict: no children under twelve, babies in buggies included; no dogs except accredited assistance dogs; nothing on wheels, so no trolleys, suitcases or folding carts; and the floor is wet all morning, so non-slip shoes, with flip-flops and open toes turned away. The City of London, which runs it, named Albert Island in the Royal Docks on 3 December 2025 as its preferred site, under the name New Billingsgate. It was on the buildings-at-risk register when LASSCO took it on. The firm has dealt in reclamation since 1979, and the stock is arranged as though somebody still lived here: chimneypieces in the front rooms, mirrors, baths and radiators in the vaulted cellar, parquet and reclaimed boards in the ballroom, door furniture and brassfoundry by the stairs. Nelson bought a hat here and had an eye patch built into it.\n\nThe bowler was made here in 1849 for a customer who wanted a hard hat his gamekeepers could wear without knocking it off on branches. This one does not, and the reason is that nearly all of it has a single landlord who lets the shops to small independent businesses rather than to whoever bids the most. What that buys is a high street behaving like a village one - a butcher, a cheesemonger, a chocolate shop, clothes shops you will not have seen at home - in the middle of the West End.\n\nDaunt Books is at number 83. It was built as a bookshop in 1912, and the long room at the back has oak galleries down both sides under a skylight, with a stained-glass window at the end. The books are arranged by country rather than by kind, so the shelf for Italy carries the novels, the histories and the walking guides together.\n\nThe food shops are round the corner on Moxon Street, halfway up: La Fromagerie, whose cheese room you walk into, the Ginger Pig's butcher's counter, and a chocolate shop. On Sunday mornings the farmers' market fills the car park on St Vincent Street from ten until two, and it is the biggest in London. Thirty-eight acres, a billion pounds a year across three trading floors and a Food Exchange, and most of what London's restaurants and florists put out passes through it.\n\nThe flower market is the part worth a civilian's attention: four in the morning to ten, and it sells to anybody. Cut flowers, foliage, pot plants and every sundry a florist uses, by the bucket and the box rather than the stem, which is why people buying for a wedding come here. It is also just a good place to walk round at an hour when London has nothing else open. That building burned in the Great Fire and its replacement burned in 1838. The present one is by Sir William Tite, opened by Queen Victoria in 1844, with a Corinthian portico, a pediment carved by Richard Westmacott the younger and - unusually for the date - concrete in its construction. Lloyd's sat in it for close to a century and a half and Reuters was founded at No. 1. The gilded grasshopper on the weathervane is Gresham's family crest, and it has survived all three buildings. The City of London, which runs it, named Albert Island in the Royal Docks on 3 December 2025 as its preferred site, under the name New Smithfield.
