The Liebig Extract of Meat Company rebuilt a disused power station here in the late 1920s as a cold store for the beef stock cube it made, and wanted its name on the tower. Skyline advertising was refused. The architect answered by putting four windows on each face of the tower in the shape of a circle, a cross and a circle, lit from inside, and no one could object to a window. The building was derelict by the 1970s and saved from demolition by the Coin Street campaign. It reopened in 1996 as workshops for designers and makers — jewellers, ceramicists, milliners, furniture makers — with galleries on the ground floor, a free public viewing gallery on the eighth, and the river walk along its front.
The studios and galleries keep their own times, mostly 11:00 to 18:00.
