The gallery fills the lower floors of the Brunei Gallery building on Thornhaugh Street, which Nicholas Hare Architects finished in 1995 and which is where its former name came from. The programme follows what the School of Oriental and African Studies teaches - the art, objects, textiles and photography of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, historic and contemporary - changes three or four times a year, and is always free.
The Japanese Roof Garden on top is reached through the galleries and keeps the same hours. Peter Swift designed it and it opened in November 2001, paid for by Haruhisa Handa; it is dedicated to forgiveness, which is the kanji cut into the granite water basin.
