Aux Merveilleux de Fred Leadenhall

Cream and meringue under the painted ironwork of Leadenhall Market.

The merveilleux is the thing: two discs of meringue sandwiched with whipped cream, rolled in shaved chocolate and left to soften for a day, which is a speciality of Lille rather than Paris and still rare here. Beside them are cramiques — an enriched brioche shot through with raisins or pearl sugar — and thick waffles filled to order. Everything is made on the premises. Inside the Victorian covered market, under Horace Jones's glass roof and cream-and-claret ironwork. A City address, so it keeps City hours and is at its quietest at the weekend, when the market largely belongs to visitors.
