Brewers Lane is a narrow walking route between George Street, which is Richmond's shopping street, and Richmond Green, and it works because of the change in scale: you leave a wide road of chain fronts and are immediately in a passage barely wide enough for two people to pass, with small independent shops either side and the green opening at the far end. It is one of several old lanes that thread between the high street and the green, and the reason they exist is that the green was there first and the town grew up to its edge.
