Laid out from about 1800 on the Marquess of Northampton's land, the earliest of Islington's squares and built plainly — brown stock brick, three storeys, no stucco and no pretension. The garden in the middle is planted with planes that now meet over the railings. George Orwell lived at 27b while he was writing Animal Farm, Evelyn Waugh at 17a a decade earlier, and Northampton Lodge on the north side holds the Estorick Collection of modern Italian art.
