Japanese coffee in a 1789 Spitalfields shopfront, with a different guest roaster every month.
Nagare is Japanese for a flowing river, after Bruce Lee's line about being like water, and the bar runs on that principle: a different guest roaster every month rather than a house coffee, served with pastries from Mahali & Co on ceramics thrown by the London potter Kimberley Chan. Number 40 was built in 1789 and was a fruit and vegetable shop on and off for most of its life, with market porters sleeping in the rooms above it; Jeanette Winterson bought the building derelict in 1996 and ran the grocery Verde & Co in it. Nagare hangs exhibitions and runs workshops in the room as well.
