The Café at Clifton Nurseries

Coffee in a glasshouse at the back of London's oldest garden centre, behind a pair of gates in Maida Vale.

Also in Breakfast & Brunch.

Clifton Nurseries has sold plants on this ground since 1851, when the houses of Clifton Villas were built around what the lease called an ornamental garden and nursery ground. Nothing of it shows from the street - a pair of gates, and behind them a walled acre of glasshouses, trees in pots and gravel paths. The café is in one of the glasshouses, with a terrace among the plants: coffee, a long list of teas, morning bakes and cakes, and wine or beer if the afternoon is going that way. The award-winning shop beside it was designed by Jeremy Dixon in 1986, a decade before he rebuilt the Royal Opera House; in the 1880s the same ground carried the largest palm house in London after Kew's.
