David Backhouse's memorial of 2004 to the animals that served in British and allied wars: eight million horses in the first war alone, and mules, dogs, camels, elephants, pigeons and glow-worms, all carved in relief along the curved Portland stone wall. The mules on the outside are laden and climbing; the horse and dog inside the wall are unburdened and looking away. The inscription on the second wall is four words: They had no choice. It stands on the edge of Hyde Park at Brook Gate, on the Park Lane side.
