Winchester College built it in 1426 and 1427 as the barn of its manor farm at Harmondsworth, and it has done nothing else since: 192 feet long, 37 wide and 39 high, twelve bays of oak with aisles either side like a church and a lattice of braces holding the roof against the wind, three doors on the east side for the wagons, and about ninety-five per cent of the timber the original carpenters cut, some of whom were probably working on cathedrals at the same time. Farmers used it until the 1970s. Then it fell to a property company that went bust and to speculators betting on compensation from a third Heathrow runway, who let it rot and opened it one day a year, until English Heritage repaired it without their consent under a rarely used power and bought it in 2012. The Friends of the Great Barn open it on summer Sundays, and it is free.
