A church stood here from about 1100. Wren gave it a tower and a needle spire after the Great Fire and the body was rebuilt in the 1810s, and that body was gutted in the Blitz of 1941. The City chose not to rebuild and in 1970 opened the shell as a garden: the walls and window tracery stand, Wren's tower stands, and the nave is lawn, benches and a fountain with creepers up the stone. It is the City's quietest corner and its most photographed.
