Burgh House was built in 1704, when Hampstead was a spa village and Londoners came up the hill for the iron-rich water, and the spa's physician, William Gibbons, moved in and put his initials on the wrought-iron gate that still stands. It has been a militia headquarters, an art expert's home with a garden by Gertrude Jekyll, of which the terrace survives, and the house where Rudyard Kipling's daughter lived and where Kipling made his last outing in 1936. Since 1979 it has belonged to a trust and holds the Hampstead Museum: the village and the Heath, the spa, and the painters and writers who filled the place, Constable, Keats and the modernists of the 1930s, told in a few rooms upstairs. The music room hosts concerts, and the Buttery in the basement opens onto the terrace. Entry is free.
