A full-size, seaworthy copy of Drake's ship, which has sailed round the world itself, in a dock beside Southwark Cathedral.
Francis Drake sailed out of Plymouth in December 1577 in a ship of about a hundred tons, renamed her the Golden Hind off South America, and came home in September 1580 the first Englishman to have sailed round the world, with a hold of Spanish treasure that repaid the Queen's investors many times over. This is the Golden Hinde of 1973, built to the same size at Appledore in Devon by traditional shipwrights: three masts, twenty-two guns, iroko planks on oak frames, and 121 feet from stem to stern, which looks small from the quay and smaller below decks, where the headroom explains a great deal about Tudor sailors. She has sailed more than 140,000 miles, round the world like the original, and has been moored at St Mary Overie Dock since 1996. Tours and children's events run through the year.
