The Foot Guards are the five regiments that guard the sovereign and fight as infantry, the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh, and Wellington Barracks on Birdcage Walk is where the guard for Buckingham Palace forms up before it marches across. Their museum, opened in 1988 under the parade ground, follows them from the 1650s through Waterloo, the Crimea and both world wars to Afghanistan, and explains the things a visitor who has just watched the guard change has seen without understanding: which regiment wears its buttons in which groups, why the bearskin, what the colours are. Uniforms, paintings, weapons, models and the mess silver fill the cases, and there is a toy soldier shop by the door.
