William Morris's Hammersmith house, and the room where the Kelmscott Press was argued into being.
Morris took this house in 1878 and lived in it until he died, and he renamed it after the Oxfordshire manor he loved, so that for eighteen years there were two Kelmscotts and he wrote letters between them. The Thames runs past the end of the garden; he liked the idea that the same water went by both houses.
The museum is in the coach house and the basement, run by the William Morris Society, and it is small in the way that suits the subject: the Albion press on which the Kelmscott Press printed, wallpapers and textiles, and the socialist side of him that the wallpaper tends to bury. The Socialist League met here on Sunday evenings and Morris lectured to them in the coach house, which is the room you stand in.
