Twenty-three magicians met at Pinoli's restaurant in Soho in 1905 and founded the Magic Circle, with David Devant as its first president and a rule of secrecy that still binds its members. Its headquarters since 1998 has been a converted house on Stephenson Way behind Euston, and the museum inside holds what the society and its members have collected: Houdini's handcuffs, apparatus from Maskelyne and Devant's shows at St George's Hall, posters, playbills, automata and the props of a dozen famous acts. There is no walking in. The public sees it on scheduled evenings and afternoons, usually with a show in the theatre upstairs, booked in advance.
