Twickenham's museum is a three-storey house of the early 1700s on the Embankment, facing St Mary's church across the lane, given to the volunteers who run it. Its subject is the stretch of river that eighteenth-century London made fashionable: Alexander Pope's villa and grotto, Horace Walpole's Gothic Strawberry Hill, Marble Hill built for a king's mistress, and the villas, watermen and eel-pie sellers between them, with Teddington, Whitton and the Hamptons further up the river. The cases start with flint axes from the Thames gravel and run to the rugby ground, and the museum's website holds far more of the record than the rooms can.
