A white weatherboarded house of about 1500 in Cheam village, kept as a free museum of itself.

A yeoman farmer built this house in the middle of Cheam around 1500. The eighteenth century covered its close-set timber frame in the white weatherboarding you see now, a stair tower went up in the sixteenth century, and most centuries since have added or changed something, so the building is its own best exhibit. Sutton council opened it as a museum in 1978 after local people campaigned for it. Inside are the parlour, the kitchens and the dressing room of Harriet Killick, a schoolteacher whose family lived here for generations, together with displays on Cheam and on Nonsuch, Henry VIII's palace a mile away, of which nothing is left above ground.
