Clapham High Street is a drinking strip rather than a club district and it is honest about that: twenty-odd pubs and bars in half a mile, from the chain rooms that fill straight from work to the Stonhouse and the Falcon on the back streets, which are pubs first and stay that way. What it has instead of a scene is sheer volume. The pavement between Clapham North and Clapham Common on a Friday is one of the busiest in south London, and the crowd is young, loud and mostly local.
Two rooms stand out of it. Infernos is a basement disco on the high street - floor-fillers, booths and a karaoke room - and it is the name people who do not live here know. The Two Brewers, halfway down, has been Clapham's gay pub since the 1980s and runs drag most nights of the week, which is the one thing on this street people travel across London for.
