Hackney's nightlife is spread rather than strung along one street, which is the first thing to know about it. Mare Street has the Hackney Empire, a Frank Matcham music hall of 1901 that still works as one, and the Empire's programme runs from opera to drag on consecutive nights.
MOTH Club is a functioning working men's club in Valette Street whose ceiling is covered in gold glitter, and which books bands who could sell out somewhere four times the size. Oslo is a converted railway building by Hackney Central. East of there, past the canal, Hackney Wick is warehouses - Colour Factory and the rooms around it - and is where the district's later end has moved as Shoreditch has got more expensive.
