The West Coast line's stopping trains reach the Chiltern edge quickest of all: Tring in forty minutes, for the Ashridge estate's beechwoods and the climb to Ivinghoe Beacon at the end of the Ridgeway; Berkhamsted, with a Norman castle beside the platform and the Grand Union canal beside that; and Bletchley, where the codebreakers’ huts are a walk from the station. The long-distance trains go on to the Lakes and Scotland, and Oxenholme is a day out only for the determined. The station is the plainest in London; the country at the end of the line is not.
