The smallest and least known of the termini, with no Underground station of its own, runs one line east along the Thames to the estuary: Leigh-on-Sea in about fifty minutes, where the old town's cockle sheds sell what came in that morning and the path runs out over the saltmarsh to Two Tree Island; then Chalkwell, whose beach is beside the platform, and Southend Central for the longest pleasure pier in the world, with a train of its own along it. It is the nearest sea to the City, and the trains run so often that nobody looks at a timetable.
