The river front is the thing. Three wide bays stand on a retaining wall straight out of the Thames, a three-storey centre between two-storey sides, with an Ionic screen across the top floor and bow windows under swept lead roofs and pierced bargeboards, each opening onto a balcony of wrought or cast iron carried on curved wooden brackets. James Tissot painted it. Historic England dates the building to 1830; the tavern's own account has it opening in 1837, the year Victoria came to the throne, on the site of the old George Tavern.
It was known for its whitebait dinners, which brought political, literary and artistic London downriver, and Dickens set Bella Wilfer's wedding breakfast here in Our Mutual Friend.
The inside is not what the outside promises. The Trafalgar closed in 1915 and spent the next fifty years as an institute for aged merchant seamen, a working men's club, a centre for the unemployed and finally flats for the navy, which is what saved it from demolition in 1937. It did not reopen as a pub until 1965, when the old interior was gutted and remade by craftsmen from Pinewood Studios - so the Regency opulence you walk into is 1960s film work. The rooms are named for naval victories and commanders and hung to match, and there are more than twenty taps.
