Historic interior
A mid-nineteenth-century stucco hotel given a lavish refit, probably in the 1890s: tiled columns to the porch, a huge mosaic floor with the name in it, carpet throughout. The main room on the right has a grey-marble counter with bulging pilasters and lozenge decoration, and a three-bay grey-marble arcade running across the room and embracing a generous staircase up to the restaurant. The stained glass is lively.
The nudes on the semicircular canopy over the servery look Art Nouveau and are not. They are signed Colin Beswick and dated 1965, and they were painted to play up a story that the place had once been a brothel - a story CAMRA considers unlikely. The idea that "randy" comes from Randolph Avenue round the corner is folk etymology, and is reported as such.
The room on the left was once three, as the pattern of the ceiling shows; the part that was lowest in status has matchboard panelling and a Bass mirror well past its best, and there are chequerwork glazed screens high up and a skylight over the first-floor landing. Edward Ardizzone drew "The Lounge at the Warrington" for Back to the Local, and Otto Preminger filmed here for Bunny Lake Is Missing in 1965. The two telephone kiosks outside are protected in their own right.
