The top of this section is red brick in a diamond pattern, the crenellations added in 1477 when the mayor Ralph Jocelyn had the wall rebuilt against a Lancastrian threat that never came. Below it the medieval stone, below that the Roman. The gardens either side were relaid in 2018 with a highwalk that lets you look down on the length of it, and the ruined tower across the road is what is left of St Alphage's church, itself the chapel of a fourteenth-century hospital. This is where the northern city wall met the older Cripplegate fort.
