St Bartholomew the Great

London's oldest parish church: Norman, dim, and the one film crews use when they need the Middle Ages.

ChurchesMedieval

Flint and stone, hemmed in by the modern City.

Founded in 1123 as an Augustinian priory by Rahere, a courtier of Henry I, and what survives is the choir of it: massive round Norman piers, and a fifteenth-century oriel window a prior inserted so that he could watch the altar from his lodgings. It came through the Great Fire and the Blitz. Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love and Sherlock Holmes were all filmed inside.
