Mat Jones performs from the script Dickens wrote for himself to read aloud on tour, unaltered, so Scrooge's cold office, Fezziwig's party, the Cratchits and the three spirits are all done with a voice and a bare stage - which is how audiences first met the story 183 years ago. The room is the point: a timber operating theatre of 1822 in the roof of a church, reached by a 52-step spiral staircase and never converted to anything else. Three performances only, on 1, 7 and 14 December; doors at 17:45, the reading from 18:00 to 19:15, and the museum stays open with the bar until 20:00. £30. Previous years sold out well ahead.
