At Wapping Hydraulic Power Station.
Open House opens the last of London's hydraulic power stations for one weekend: self-guided, hourly, 10:00 to 16:00 on the Saturday and from 11:00 on the Sunday, and free, though you book a slot. Thomas Hawksley built it in 1890 to pump water at 800 pounds to the square inch into the mains under Wapping, and it was the last station of the network to close, in 1977. It spent twenty years as the Wapping Project and then a decade shut. The Glass Castle Foundation has it now and has started restoring it as a centre for experimental performance; the open weekend is the first chance most people have had to see the engine house, the boiler house and the accumulator tower since it closed.
