Foyles

Four miles of shelving up an atrium, on the road that used to be nothing but bookshops.

William and Gilbert Foyle failed the civil service exam in 1903, sold their textbooks, found people wanted more, and built the shop out of that. For decades it was famously infuriating - stock arranged by publisher rather than subject, and three separate queues to buy a book - until the family reorganised it. Since 2014 it has been in the old Central Saint Martins building next door, built round a top-lit atrium with the shelves climbing the sides.
