Guided tours worth booking: walks led by people who know the streets, and the bus, river and cycling tours that earn their fare. Each is drawn on the map as the ground it covers, from where it meets.
The Victorian underside of Southwark, in the corners the rebuilding missed.
Every Monday, 10:45Walking
Just over the river from the City is the ground where the Victorians put everything they did not want to look at - the prisons, the tanneries, the rookeries, the burial grounds. The walk goes looking for what is left of it in a quarter now largely rebuilt, which is a matter of noticing fragments: a boundary wall, a street pattern, a name that has outlived what it described.
