Monteverdi Choir: Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle

Rossini's late mass, which is neither little nor especially solemn.

Classical

At Alexandra Palace.

Rossini wrote it in 1863 for twelve singers, two pianos and a harmonium, called it the last sin of his old age, and asked God whether he had written sacred music or 'sacrilegious music'. The Monteverdi Choir sing it in the restored Victorian theatre.
