The runners are only half of it: the route is lined the whole way, with bands, sound systems and several hundred thousand people shouting at strangers by name. Cutty Sark at around six miles, Tower Bridge at thirteen, the Isle of Dogs, the Embankment, and the finish on The Mall. 2027 is a one-off: the marathon runs across two days, with 100,000 runners split between them — the largest marathon ever staged. Free to watch anywhere on the route; getting across it is the hard part, so check which bridges and roads are shut.
