Antonio Canal came to London in 1746, when the War of the Austrian Succession had stopped his Venetian customers coming to him, and stayed the better part of nine years. He lodged here and advertised in the Daily Advertiser that gentlemen might see a view of St James's Park he had painted, having heard that the town suspected he was not the real Canaletto at all. He painted the Thames from Somerset House, Westminster Bridge going up, Whitehall, Vauxhall Gardens and Warwick Castle, and the light in them is Venetian light on English weather, which is much of their strangeness.
