Eric Estorick was an American sociologist who found Boccioni's Futurist Painting and Sculpture in a bookshop on his honeymoon in 1947, went straight to Milan and bought most of what was in Mario Sironi's studio, and then, between 1953 and 1958, when the Futurists were unfashionable and cheap, bought the rest: Boccioni, Balla, Severini and Carrà, the painters who had wanted to put speed and machines on canvas before the First World War, with Modigliani, de Chirico and a quiet room of Morandi's bottles. He turned down offers from the Italian state and from museums in America and Israel, put everything into a foundation months before he died in 1993, and the collection opened in 1998 in a Georgian house on Canonbury Square, six galleries with a library, a bookshop and an Italian café opening onto the garden. It is the only gallery in the country devoted to modern Italian art.
