Roland Penrose, Herbert Read and a handful of friends founded the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1946 as a place where artists, writers and scientists could argue outside the Royal Academy's walls, and its first shows, of modern art and of 40,000 years of it, set the tone. The Independent Group met here in the early 1950s and invented British pop art over its coffee; Picasso, Pollock and Bacon were shown early, and later the punks, the video artists and the performance art nobody else would house. Since 1968 it has occupied Nash House, the eastern end of Carlton House Terrace, John Nash's last great stucco range above the Mall, which is the joke of the place: the most difficult programme in London behind the most establishment façade. Two galleries, two cinemas showing what the multiplexes will not, a theatre, a bookshop and a bar, with a membership that makes most of it cheap.
