The Royal Collection, a million objects gathered by the kings and queens since Henry VIII, belongs to the sovereign in trust and mostly lives in the palaces; the gallery on the south side of Buckingham Palace is where the public sees it. Elizabeth II opened it in 1962 on the site of the palace chapel that a bomb had destroyed in 1940, and John Simpson's rebuilding of 2002, with a Doric porch on Buckingham Gate, tripled its size. It has no permanent hang. Each exhibition draws about 450 works from the whole collection, so what is on the walls is whatever the current show is about: two hundred of Leonardo's drawings in 2019, Canaletto, Vermeer and the Dutch pictures, Fabergé, the Tudors, royal photography. It was the Queen's Gallery until 2024, when it took the King's name, and it opens on a ticket for most of the year.
