The gallery on the palace's west side, rebuilt in 2002, shows what the Crown owns and the public otherwise never sees - the Leonardo drawings, the Vermeer, the Fabergé - in two or three exhibitions a year. For the centenary of Elizabeth II's birth it has given the whole space to her wardrobe: the Norman Hartnell wedding and coronation dresses, the Hardy Amies day clothes, the headscarves and the hats, two hundred pieces with the sketches and the reasons behind them, which is as close as a museum gets to the woman.
