Xue Ruozhe: One Table, Two Chairs

Paintings built on the bare stage of Chinese opera, where a table and two chairs make a palace.

Art & designFree

At Massimo De Carlo.

In traditional Chinese opera a single table and two chairs can stand for a palace, a battlefield or a riverbank: the stage stays bare and the audience does the rest. Xue Ruozhe has taken that as the structure for a new body of work made for the three rooms here, and paints almost entirely in neutrals and warm tones, on the principle that black already contains five colours — a dress rendered only in grey will read as blue if the scene around it asks for blue. Their first London show with the gallery. Free.
