Maureen Paley

The East End gallery that showed Wolfgang Tillmans and Gillian Wearing first, still in Bethnal Green.

Commercial galleryFree

Maureen Paley began showing art in her own house in 1984, when nobody showed art east of the City, and gave Tillmans, Wearing and Rebecca Warren their first London exhibitions; Tillmans and Wearing both went on to the Turner Prize from here. Three spaces now - Three Colts Lane, Herald Street and Studio M at Rochelle School - with the main gallery in a converted workshop by the railway.
