Hirst has been buying other people's work since the late 1980s, and this is where it is shown - never all of it, and never his own: one exhibition at a time, drawn from the collection or given over to a single artist, with a catalogue and no charge at the door. Caruso St John made the building out of three Victorian scenery-painting studios that ran most of the length of Newport Street, keeping the sawtooth roofs and adding a brick drum at either end, and won the Stirling Prize for it in 2016. The staircases inside are the part people photograph: two of them, cut as spirals through solid brick. The gallery keeps no continuous programme - it shuts between shows, sometimes for months - so the thing to check before setting out is whether one is on.
