David Crawforth and Naomi Siderfin spent the early 1990s running Nosepaint, an experimental art night held on the first Saturday of the month in whatever room would have it. In July 1995 they took the lease on the derelict Lambeth Ragged Schools in Newport Street and opened it that September, with a German artist performing in the company of a nineteenth-century oil painting; they direct it still. Three spaces make up a little over four hundred square metres, and nearly everything in them was made for them: an artist is given the rooms and the months to make something here, rather than a slot in a touring schedule. Sound, screen work and performance turn up as often as objects on a wall, and one residency a year goes to an artist working on the environment.
