Paolozzi took William Blake's 1795 print of Newton measuring the universe with a pair of dividers, hunched and blind to everything but his geometry, and made it four metres tall in bronze, assembled from bolted sections as if the scientist himself were a machine. It sits in the piazza of the British Library, which holds the Blake, and is the best-known piece of the sculptor who also designed the Tottenham Court Road mosaics.
