J. M. Barrie commissioned George Frampton and paid for it himself, and had it erected in secret on the night of 30 April 1912 so that on May Day morning it was simply there, on the bank of the Long Water where Peter lands in The Little White Bird. He plays a pipe on a bronze tree stump crowded with rabbits, mice, squirrels and fairies, and a century of hands has polished the rabbits gold. Barrie lived across the road at Bayswater and walked here every day. There are six other casts around the world, but this is the first, on the spot Barrie chose.
