Borough Yards

Victorian railway arches opened up into a run of lanes between Borough Market and the river.

Lanes & alleysCobbled

The arches at Borough Yards, looking through to Stoney Street.

The brick viaducts that carry the trains into London Bridge were solid walls of arch and soot for a century and a half; here they have been cut through and paved, so you can walk from the market to Clink Street and the Thames underneath the railway rather than around it. Shops and a cinema are set into the arches themselves, the paving is granite sett, and the trains still go over the top of you.
