An ordinary Soho back street until John Stephen, a Glaswegian with an eye for what young men would wear, opened a shop here in 1957 and then another and another, until Carnaby Street was where London bought its clothes and Time put it on the cover of its Swinging City issue in 1966. It spent the decades afterwards as a tourist trap and has been steadily brought back: the Victorian shopfronts are restored, no cars come down it, and Kingly Court behind stacks three floors of restaurants round a courtyard. The best of it is the lanes either side, Newburgh Street and Ganton Street.
