Lanes & alleys
Ham Street runs from Ham Common to the Thames between cottages, walls and trees, and it is worth walking because of what it arrives at. Ham House was finished in 1610 for Sir Thomas Vavasour, Knight Marshal to James I, and was nearly doubled in size after 1672 by Elizabeth Murray and her second husband John Maitland, Duke of Lauderdale, who fitted out the state apartments with a lavishness that went beyond what their rank called for.
What makes it rare is what happened next, which is nothing. Later generations of the family spent their money preserving the house and its contents rather than bringing them up to date, so the 1670s interiors and much of the furniture bought for them are still in place. It went to the National Trust in 1948.
