Lakeside Terrace

The Barbican's water terrace: concrete, fountains and a lake with the towers standing over it.

Squares & yards

The lake from the terrace, with the Barbican's blocks around it.

Chamberlin, Powell and Bon spent two decades building the estate and gave the middle of it over to water. The terrace runs along one side of the lake, in front of the arts centre, with the residential blocks on their columns opposite and the fountains going in the middle. The concrete is bush-hammered by hand — the aggregate was picked to be exposed like that — and the whole thing is a floor above the traffic, as the estate was designed to be.
